A very rare and special watch made by F.P. Journe has just been sold for about $10.7 million at an auction in New York. This watch belonged to the famous movie director Francis Ford Coppola, who made movies like The Godfather.
This sale broke records. It is now:
- The most expensive F.P. Journe watch ever sold
- The most expensive watch made by an independent watchmaker
Why is this watch so important?
This watch is called the FFC, named after Francis Ford Coppola. It was specially made through a collaboration between Coppola and watchmaker François-Paul Journe.
Coppola sold this watch to help recover money he lost while making his 2024 movie Megalopolis.
What makes the watch unique?
This watch does not tell time like normal watches.
- The hours are shown by a mechanical hand whose fingers open and close to count from 1 to 12.
- The minutes are shown on a ring around the edge of the watch.
- The moving hand is inspired by an old medical prosthetic hand from history.
Only two watches like this were ever made (one of two in this configuration with the black hand and steel bridges), which makes it extremely rare.
How does it work?
F.P. Journe, watch has a platinum case and a very advanced movement inside. At the top of every hour, energy is released all at once, making the fingers move quickly to show the new hour. This shows how skilled and creative the watchmaker is.
